Adnan Ali
Adnan Ali is a Maldivian civil and structural engineer and the Chief Engineer and Managing Director of CVNG Consulting, an engineering consultancy in Malé. He holds a B.Eng (Civil/Structural) and an M.Eng, and is a registered engineer in the Maldives with experience in structural design, transport engineering and airport planning.
He designed two Thaana typefaces released by Thaana Type Foundry in 2021, both under the SIL Open Font License. Motaru Dhigu is based on natural handwriting and updates the long, stretched strokes of early-20th-century Dhivehi handwriting. The name honours his father. Motaru Square has perfectly square edges, so Thaana text can be stacked in regular patterns. The idea came from his work on the Uvadhoani project.
Uvadhoani is an online magazine run by CVNG Consulting that publishes technical writing about construction in Dhivehi. The team decided to set the new magazine in fonts of its own, and it was registered with the Ministry of Home Affairs in October 2021.
