Mohamed Faiz
Mohamed Faiz, known as Dhanbumaa Faiz, was a Maldivian businessman and amateur calligrapher who died in March 2024. He was best known for running cafés (hotaa) under the Dhanbumaa name in Malé, and he also ran restaurants and a wedding catering service. He worked in the post office, finance and agriculture sectors. In the late 1960s he ran a madrasa, Madhrasathul Ibthidhaaiyya, from his home and served as its headmaster (naazir).
Calligraphy was a lifelong hobby for him, in both Arabic and Thaana. Much of his writing survives in exercise books, and he gave his children a handwritten recipe book. When his family found they could not reproduce the book directly, they worked with Loopcraft's RaajjeType foundry to turn his handwriting into a font. Dhanbumaa was launched on 10 August 2025 in Regular and Bold; the bold weight is based on the headings in the recipe book. The font is free to use, and the family plans to publish his recipe book set in it.
